XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition: Day Fifteen, Performances Come to a Close

Piano

The third day of the final piano sessions began on June 29 with a performance by Alexander Romanovsky (Ukraine). He presented his interpretation of Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto. Seong Jin Cho (South Korea) followed with Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. As in previous days, the Russian National Orchestra was conducted by Alexander Dmitriev.

The piano competition will conclude on June 30 with performances by Daniil Trifonov (Russia), Yeol Eum Son (South Korea), and Alexey Chernov (Russia). They will present piano concertos by Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Brahms. The sessions start at 1:00 p.m.

The Awards Ceremony will begin at 8:00 p.m. in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall.
 


Cello

The cello competition came to an end on June 29. On this final day, three cellists took to the stage of the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall: Ivan Karizna (Belarus), Edgar Moreau (France), and Umberto Clerici (Italy). The final performances, accompanied by the State Academic Symphony Orchestra with Mikhail Agrest, began with Mr. Karizna. For his last performance, he chose Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Mr. Moreau, who performed next, played Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme. Last to perform was Mr. Clerici, who performed Schumann’s Cello Concerto. The final two works were conducted by Pavel Smelkov.

The cello jury will name the winners on June 30 at 8:00 p.m. in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall.
 


Violin and Voice

June 29 marked the final day of competition in St. Petersburg. At 7:00 p.m., in both the Great Hall of the Philharmonia and the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall, the final sessions of the violin and voice categories began.

The last three violin finalists performed at the Philharmonia: Jehye Lee (South Korea), Itamar Zorman (Israel), and Eric Silberger (USA). They played violin conceros by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and Bartók, respectively.

In the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall, all voice finalists performed: Enkhtaivan Chimed (Mongolia), Enkhbat Amartuvshin (Mongolia), Jongmin Park (South Korea), Sun Young Seo (South Korea), Jung Nan Yoon (South Korea), Alexei Tatarintsev (Russia), Angelina Nikitchenko (Russia), and Elena Guseva (Russia). The program of the third round incuded the overture to the opera La forza del destino, Leonora’s cavatina from La trovatore, Violetta’s scene and aria from La traviata, Rigoletto’s aria from Rigoletto, Rodrigo’s death scene from Verdi’s Don Carlos, Gorislava’s overture and cavatina from Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila, Marfa’s aria from Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride, Alvise Badoero’s aria from Ponchielli’s La gioconda, Faust’s recitative and aria from Faust, Prince Yeletsky’s aria and Count Tomsky’s ballad from The Queen of Spades, and King René’s arioso from Iolanta, in addition to Lensky’s aria and three performances of Tatyana’s letter scene from Eugene Onegin.

The violin and voice results will be announced at the Awards Ceremony June 30 at 8:00 p.m. in Moscow in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall.
