Preselection Round (DVD Auditions)

Round I

Maximum twenty minutes in length.*

  1. Aria from an opera, cantata or oratorio by one of the following composers: J.S. Bach, H. Purcell, G. F. Handel, C. Gluck, J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart.
  2. Aria from an opera by one of the following composers: C.M. von Weber, G. Rossini, G. Donizetti, V. Bellini, M. Glinka, R. Wagner, G. Verdi, C. Gounod, S. Moniuszko, B. Smetana, A. Borodin, C. Saint-Saens, L. Delibes, G. Bizet, M. Mussorgsky, A. Dvorak, N. Rimsky-Korsakov, R. Leoncavallo, G. Puccini, P. Mascagni, S. Rachmaninov or P.I. Tchaikovsky.
  3. P.I. Tchaikovsky. One song.

Round II

Maximum thirty five minutes in length.*

  1. P.I. Tchaikovsky. One song (excluding 16 Songs for Children, op. 54, and the song performed in Round I)
  2. One of the songs, lieder or chansons by F. Schubert, R. Schumann, M. Glinka, M. Balakirev, A. Dargomyzhsky, A.Borodin, M. Mussorgsky, N. Rimsky-Korsakov, L. van Beethoven, J. Brahms, E. Grieg, F. Mendelssohn, A. Dvorak, C. Debussy, S. Rachmaninov, M. Ravel, G. Mahler, H. Wolf, M. de Falla, S. Prokofiev or G. Sviridov.
  3. A folk song with piano or a capella, preferably from the competitor’s country of origin.
  4. A major aria of the competitor’s own choice.
  5. An aria from an opera, cantata or oratorio, composed after 1950.

Round III

Maximum thirty minutes in length.*

  1. P.I. Tchaikovsky. An aria from an opera or the cantata “Moscow” (No. 4 for a baritone, No. 5 for a mezzo-soprano). An aria by N. Rimsky-Korsakov for a coloratura soprano.
  2. An opera aria of the performer’s choice. If the score and parts are not readily available, the Organizing Committee has the right to request that the participant sends them in advance.


Rules and Procedures Related to Repertoire

  1. Total performance times, which will be strictly enforced, include pauses. The Jury retains the right to stop a performance if the competitor exceeds the allotted time. Repeats are at the discretion of the performer.
  2. If requested, competitors must provide the chairman of the Jury a copy of the edition of the score used in the preparation of each work performed.
  3. Changes in submitted repertoire or running order may be made only with permission of the Organizing Committee. No changes will be accepted after May 1, 2011. Any proposed changes must include timings.

 

*Note:  All compositions are to be performed in the original language. Each work can be performed in only one round of the Competition. The order of performance can be determined by the competitor. The arias are to be performed in their original key. The songs, lieder and chansons may be transposed except those works composed for a particular voice. The songs by P.I. Tchaikovsky (Round I) should be performed in the original key. (basses may transpose)
