Preselection Round (DVD Auditions)

A recital not to exceed fifty minutes in length and consisting of the following works:

  1. Any Prelude and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach.
  2. Four virtuosic etudes, one of which should be by F. Chopin, one by F. Liszt, and the other two by S. Rachmaninov and/or A. Scriabin.
  3. A sonata by J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart or L. van Beethoven.
  4. One or more compositions of the candidate’s choice.

Only complete works will be accepted.


 

Round I

A recital not to exceed fifty minutes in length and consisting of the following works:

  1. A sonata by J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven or F. Schubert.
  2. Two or more contrasting works by P.I. Tchaikovsky.
  3. One or more compositions of the participant’s choice.
Works performed in the DVD auditions may be repeated.
 Only complete works will be accepted.

 

Round II

Phase I:

A recital not to exceed sixty minutes in length. The repertoire will consist of works chosen by the pianist and must include the composition written for the Competition (no more than seven minutes in length)*. Besides the composition written for the Competition, the program must include one or more compositions by a Russian composer(s). Works from Round I may not be repeated. Only complete works will be accepted.

*The score of the composition written for the Competition for the piano, violin, and cello divisions will be submitted two month before the Competition. The composition does not need to be memorized.


Phase II:

One of the following piano concerti by W.A. Mozart with a chamber orchestra:
No. 9 in E-flat major, K. 271
No. 12 in A major, K. 414
No. 20 in D minor, K. 466
No. 21 in C major, K. 467
No. 23 in A major, K. 488
No. 24 in C minor, K. 491
No. 27 in B-flat major, K. 595

Round III

Two concerti for piano and orchestra:

  1. P.I. Tchaikovsky Nos. 1 or 2.
  2. A concerto of the performer’s choice (excluding the one performed in Round II). If the score and parts are not readily available, the Organizing Committee has the right to request that the participant sends them in advance.

Rules and Procedures Relating to Repertoire

  1. Total performance times, which will be strictly enforced, include pauses. The Jury retains the right to stop a performance if the competitor exceeds the allotted time. Repeats are at the discretion of the performer.
  2. If requested, competitors must provide the chairman of the Jury a copy of the edition of the score used in the preparation of each work performed.
  3. Changes in submitted repertoire or running order may be made only with permission of the Organizing Committee. No changes will be accepted after May 1, 2011. Any proposed changes must include timings.
