Rules for Application

  1. The Fourteenth International Tchaikovsky Competition is open to musicians of all nationalities. First-prize winners of previous Tchaikovsky Competitions are not eligible to compete.
  2. The Application Form can be submitted online, by email or post. It must be completed, signed, and sent with all the necessary enclosures to the Organizing Committee.  *DVDs and all mailed support materials for the application must be mailed to the Moscow address only by express mail services such as DHL, Fed Ex, EMS, and others.
  3. The following supplementary materials must accompany each Application Form:
    • A photocopy of the applicant's birth certificate, or equivalent proof of age;
    • A current one-page biography or resume;
    • List of concerti in the applicant's repertoire, together with indication of at least four concerti that will be ready for performance during the 2011-2012 season (for pianists, violinists and cellists);
    • Two full recital programs that will be ready for performance in the 2011-2012 season;
    • List of major solo works and chamber music (or opera roles for singers) in the applicant's repertoire, together with the dates most recently performed (if applicable);
    • Color photographs, preferably in digital format with a resolution of 300 dpi, including one head-shot, approximately 13 cm x 17 cm (5 inches x 7 inches), suitable for publicity purposes. These can be submitted on CD, emailed, or physical copies can be mailed;
    • Photocopies of any awards from other competitions;
    • An unedited DVD of a fifty-minute maximum length recital recorded between November, 2009 and November, 2010. Each individual work must be recorded in its entirety and in one unedited take.  The works, however, may have been recorded on different dates.  Preselection by an international jury will take place in Moscow prior to February 20, 2011.
  4. Together with the completed application, or not later than December 1, 2010, all applicants must submit a nonrefundable application fee of 100 Euro*.

  5. Applicants must supply the following recommendations:
    • A recommendation letter from a recent teacher of the applicant or, in the event that an applicant is still a student, from the current teacher. This letter must be written to recommend the applicant specifically to the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition;
    • Provide name and contact information (telephone and/or email) of a musician(s) of acknowledged international standing, or of his/her representative, willing to recommend the applicant specifically to the Competition.
  6. Applicants should retain copies of all material sent with their applications. The material will not be returned to the competitors.
  7. An acknowledgement will be sent to each applicant upon receipt of the completed Application Form and enclosures. Incomplete applications or applications without all necessary enclosures will not be considered.
  8. All applications will be reviewed by the Organizing Committee and treated as confidential. The Organizing Committee reserves the right to request additional information from or about an applicant.
  9. All applicants will be notified whether or not they have been accepted to appear in Round I of the Competition no later than March 1, 2011. Not less then thirty selected pianists, twenty five violinists, twenty five cellists, twenty male and twenty female singers will be announced to the public immediately thereafter.

*The competition application deadline of December 15, 2010, has now passed, however, applicants still have the ability to pay fees in the online application system. 


Rules and Procedures for the Competition

  1. The Competition will consist of three separate rounds: Round I, Round II and Round III (Final). Round II will consist of two phases. All rounds will be open to the public. All works must be played from the memory except sonatas for violin and piano, cello and piano, and a work written for the Competition.
  2. The Jury will not advance more than twelve pianists, twelve violinists and twelve cellists to Phase I of Round II. The Jury will not advance more than eight pianists, eight violinists and eight cellists to Phase II of Round II. The Jury will not advance more than ten male and ten female singers to Round II. The Jury will not advance more than five pianists, five violinists, five cellists, four male and four female singers to Round III.
  3. The competitors (except pianists) may bring their own accompanists to the Competition, and, if so, must mention it in the application form. Alternatively, the Organizing Committee can provide accompanists for two rehearsals and performances in the first two rounds.
  4. The order of appearance of competitors in Round I will be determined by a drawing. The Competition will follow this order except, at the discretion of the Chairman of the Jury in each division, for reasons of accident, illness, or other unusual circumstances.
  5. The competitors will be provided with practice time in a number of rehearsal facilities and the opportunity to rehearse on stage prior to each round.
  6. A selection of pianos will be provided for the pianists on June 12 and 13, 2011.
  7. All rounds of the Competition may be broadcast and webcast live or may be recorded and videotaped for subsequent broadcast, video, or audio recording use. Parts or all of the Competition will be made available on the Internet. Applicants will be required to sign a release form yielding all rights on such materials to the Organizing Committee, its assignees or licensees. Neither the Organizing Committee nor its assignees or licensees may be held liable for any payments to competitors arising out of materials derived from Competition performances.
  8. Competitors may not contact or speak with any member of the Jury as long as they continue to participate in the Competition. Any violation of this rule may disqualify the competitor.
  9. The results of each round will be announced shortly following each round.
  10. The decision of the Jury is final and cannot be reviewed.

Rules Relating to Prizes and Engagements

  1. The Organizing Committee for the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition will announce five prizes for piano, five prizes for violin, five prizes for cello, four prizes for male singers and four prizes for female singers. Only one Grand Prix winner among all first prize winners might be announced.
    Grand Prix 10,000 Euro may be granted in addition to the First Prize;
    First Prize 20,000 Euro and Gold Medal;
    Second Prize 15,000 Euro and Silver Medal;
    Third Prize 10,000 Euro and Bronze Medal;
    Fourth Prize 5,000 Euro and Diploma;
    Fifth Prize 3,000 Euro and Diploma;
    Best chamber concerto performance 2000 Euro and Diploma;
    Best performance of the work specially written for the Competition 2000 Euro and Diploma;
    The First Prizes are always to be awarded.
    All prize amounts are indicated net of Russian national and local taxes.
  2. Russian residents will be paid for prizes in Rubles in accordance with the exchange rate of the Central Bank of Russia on the date of payment.
  3. The Jury, acting within the limits of the number of prizes to be awarded, has the right to:
    • refrain from awarding all prizes (except for the First Prizes which are always to be awarded);
    • divide the prizes between performers (except for the Grand Prix).
  4. Two performers designated by the Jury in each discipline who do not advance to Round III will be awarded a Diploma and 1,000 Euro.
  5. The Jury will have the right to award special diplomas to the best accompanists of the Competition (not more than two diplomas in each discipline) and to present each with a prize of 1,000 Euro.
  6. Russian and foreign public organizations, artists’ unions, mass media, institutions and companies may award special prizes upon approval by the Organizing Committee. These prizes must be approved before the beginning of the Competition.
  7. The Organizing Committee will prepare the list of potential recital and orchestral engagements for the laureates of the 2011 Competition, to be performed within the three-year period following the Competition. The list of engagements forming part of the prizes will be published in the competition program book in June of 2011. Scheduling of these engagements will take into account any prior commitments of the laureates, but the laureates will be expected to fulfill all prize engagements. Failure to do so may result, at the discretion of the Organizing Committee, in forfeiture of the laureates' claim to any future engagements.
  8. The Gold Medalists shall perform in the Laureats' Concert on July 1 in Moscow and on July2 in St. Petersburg.
  9. The First, Second, and Third Prize winners will, if requested, perform a maximum of two recitals without charge for the benefit of the Fifteenth International Tchaikovsky Competition, to be held in 2015.
